I have a 'Getting Started' section at the beginning of the Menu on my Web/CT page. One item that is included in that section is to let students know what to put in the 'Content' line of the email. I ask that they always do the following: Make sure to include your name and what the content is of the item you are emailing. For example, wood_introduction doc. This way, I can quickly see who has submitted the assignment.
Jackie
IDEA: Student-Student Feedback
I have created assignments for students to critique each other constructively and given points for appropriate feedback. The students then have the opportunity to revise their assignment before turning it in to me. It is muchless time intensive to grade acorrect assignment than one that requires multiple edits. IDEA: Use PDFs
I think it important that everyone teaching online has Adobe Professional. HTML is okay for some applications but does not always print well. Posting assignments in Word may be a problem because not all students have Word. I found I have less problems if I post everything in PDF. Most computers have Adobe Reader , if not it is an easy download. Trying to get converters is much more difficult. This is a fun way to get the students ingaged quickly and peak their interest of the upcoming unit of study. Animoto is free for you to create a 15 second video. You can use up to 15 pictures and any music they offer or you can use music of your own remembering the copywrite issues.
Jackie

When reviewing the introductions make a list of topics and select one that would be of common interest to the majority of students.Create a discussion for that topic. On the first post embed a slide show or short video regarding the topic and ask for some type of input. Everyone enjoys slideshows or videos. Most everyone has an opinion about slideshows. To build community for e-learners, for a first time assigned group meeting, have students work collaboratively on an ice breaker puzzle through a webinar activity. A selected leader in each group pulls up the document (instructor posted activity) with the puzzle and students solve itby accessing the mic and filling in the answers on the document.A bonus for students is to turn on the camera, if they have access to one.
cj
Idea:New Community
One method to develop online communities is askingstudentsto introduce themselves and to include hobbiesor topics of interest.
